Sindh flood victims to be affected with epidemic: NDMA

ISLAMABAD: The spokesman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Arshad Bhatti said that over ten to twelve hundred thousand of flood victims living in various relief camps will be affected with epidemics such as cholera, malaria, skin diseases and eye soars.

Talking to a private news channel on Thursday, he said that if the international community does not provide assistant immediately then over 100,000 people may contract various kinds of diseases.
He said that 500,000 children below the age of five are most likely to face these diseases.
The spokesman said that over five million people have been affected by this flood.
There are several organisations such as NDMA, Sindh Provincial Government and nearly 56 international NGOs busy in relief and rehabilitation activities.
They have formed over 400 teams and are still involved in survey work, he added.
He said over 4.5 million acres of land have been affected by the rains, nearly 60,000  cattle have died and disappeared, nearly twelve hundred thousand houses have been damaged while over 400,000 have been completely destroyed.
The NDMA spokesman said 50,000 tents have been provided to the affected people.
He also said that the ration worth Rs. 2.5 billion has been sent to various areas. So far they have only been able to approach a very small amount of area because of flood water which has been hindering transportation.
He said people are sitting at various places on the roads due to being homeless, adding 50,000 more tents will be distributed in the next two or three days.
He said, according to the estimates of the Sindh Rehabilitation Board crops and cattle worth 250 billion rupees have been destroyed.
